The Makhambet Atyrau Regional Academic Kazakh Drama Theatre has officially concluded its 88th theatre season with the requiem performance Farewell, Karaoi, staged after Taken Alimkulov’s short story Karaoi.
Having become one of the theatre’s landmark productions, the performance takes audiences into the final days of the life of the great Kazakh poet, warrior, and national hero Makhambet Utemisuly. Rather than focusing solely on his heroic deeds, the production explores his inner world, loneliness, emotional struggles, and unwavering devotion to his homeland and people.
As Makhambet journeys alone to Karaoi, he reflects on his life filled with sacrifice and resistance, remembers his loyal companion Isatay Taymanuly, and contemplates his ideals, his love for his native land, and the destiny of his nation. Through memories and haunting visions, the performance reveals the depth of the Kazakh national spirit, inviting audiences to reflect on the true meaning of freedom, courage, and human dignity.
The production is directed by Mukangali Tomanov. The role of Makhambet is performed by Myrzabek Makulov, while Beket Zinullin portrays Isatay, and Gaziz Surappayev appears as Khan Zhangir.
The 88th theatre season has been a period of artistic achievement, creative exploration, and memorable premieres. Throughout the season, audiences enjoyed several new productions, including Love Roulette, One Wedding for Five Bachelors, the children’s play The Kingdom of Wisdom, the documentary drama Mama Roza, and a new stage interpretation of William Shakespeare’s classic comedy The Taming of the Shrew.
Concluding the season with Farewell, Karaoi marked a fitting finale to a remarkable theatrical year. Rich in philosophical depth and national spirit, the production once again reaffirmed the theatre’s commitment to artistic excellence and its mission to present performances that resonate deeply with audiences.
The Makhambet Atyrau Regional Academic Kazakh Drama Theatre sincerely thanks its audiences for their continued support and looks forward to welcoming theatre lovers to the 89th season, which promises exciting premieres, innovative creative projects, and unforgettable theatrical experiences.
